Why Do People Refer To You? Here Are Three Reasons . . .

by Rita Zamora

People have different reasons for referring to you. In some cases it may be easy to encourage referrals, for example by offering incentives to those motivated by rewards.  Other situations may require your time and personal attention.  You may need to offer exceptional customer service or client care in order to receive referrals motivated by emotions or relationships. Here are three reasons people refer to you.

1. They want to help you. They simply like you, and they like your services.  These clients are happy to tell others about you because they feel they have a relationship with you, they are loyal, and they trust you.

2. They want to help others. These clients tell others who the best dentist, lawyer, realtor, or massage therapist is. They like knowing that others come to them for advice; they are "connectors" and know who the best service providers are, what restaurants to visit, and where people should shop.

3. They want to be recognized. Each time these clients refer to you they want to be acknowledged or rewarded in some way. This may be a handwritten note, gift card, movie tickets, reward, etc.
